Simulacra of a Masculine Bond
From art installation at OU Visual School of Art
This piece shows that there is a correlation between certain items and masculinity. The intention for the viewer is to question how the items, in a simulated space, function in a heavily masculine culture. The meaning I am trying to communicate is that items can function as proxies for men’s emotions, due to the reason that is socially condemning to show any type of “soft” emotion in a southern conservative American culture. To show this I present a specific item that holds meaning to me. I hope to use this as an example to show an instance of this bond. There are three videos that are projected. The one that is in black and white signifies a memory sequence. The one that shows nature represents the impression of the campgrounds, the aura of the land. The video that shows the knife represents my own desire for what the knife represents, a bond with my masculine role model.
